Posted by The Register on Saturday, 25 February 2016 12:30:03Software engineers earn an average of $83,000 per year, according to research firm KPMG.
But that number is more likely to be inflated by a range of factors.
For starters, there are plenty of software engineers who are in the top 10 per cent of the workforce, with more than one in five of them earning more than $100,000 a year.
“The best way to get to that number, I would suggest, is to be a software designer.
That’s what you get paid for when you work at a big company,” says Michael Hutton, an IT professional with 30 years of experience and a degree in engineering from Queen’s University.
And that doesn’t mean you’re a career-focused software engineer, says Hutton.
“I think there are a lot of people who don’t really see themselves as a software developer,” he says.
“If they look at themselves as an engineer, that’s an interesting way to think about them.
You have to be able to get an edge in a wide variety of fields, so I would say there are people who are really looking for a software engineering position.”
For Hutton and others, there’s an upside to being a software professional, as they’ve found they can enjoy higher pay and other perks as a result.
“For a software project to be successful you need to be motivated and able to do the right thing at the right time.
You need to have a strong understanding of what the product is, how it works and what it’s about,” he explains.
For those looking for the best paid software engineer jobs, it’s worth taking a look at the numbers, as the salaries of software engineer are higher than they are in many other fields.
Here’s a look what’s out there in the job market, with the most recent figures from KPMP.

Software engineer salaries vary depending on where you work.
