India has an acute shortage of tax preparation tools and is working to increase its supply to help it comply with the Supreme Court’s judgement on December 11.
The ruling had clarified that the Centre had to allow states and the Centre to set up their own tax departments and services.
The court had said that states should be allowed to set their own income tax department, including the ability to deduct personal expenses, and allow their employees to earn more than Rs 2 lakh per month from their earnings.
The Centre has been working on getting tax department staff trained and on increasing the supply of tax forms to all states and territories, the Finance Ministry said in a statement.
The Finance Ministry has already started providing a tax filing and filing of forms for filing income tax returns, the ministry said.
It said that the finance ministry has already set up a department in the Finance Department to ensure the ease of filing income and corporation tax returns and other financial and personal tax matters.
The ministry has also increased the supply and procurement of tax and other forms and software, it said.
