The first ever ‘sunny-side’ solar power system is now being built by an electric car startup in the United States, according to a report from the Washington Post.
The company, SolarCity, has teamed up with local electric utility Northern Arizona Power to install a solar array that will be able to generate power from solar panels that are placed atop the utility’s substations.
The solar system, which was built to help reduce solar energy use, will provide energy for a total of 12,000 homes in Arizona, according the Post.
SolarCity says it will use solar panels from its own batteries and will pay for its installation by selling electricity back to the grid.
The SolarCity solar array was built at a company that is owned by billionaire Elon Musk, according a spokesperson for SolarCity.
“The solar array we’re building is powered by a combination of solar cells and rooftop solar panels,” SolarCity spokesperson Ben Todhunter told the Post, adding that the company is using the panels “to create solar energy for customers without electricity.”
SolarCity has also partnered with other solar energy companies to build a similar solar system for other utilities in Arizona.
The system is expected to provide electricity to a total 1,600 homes, according Todhunger.
The US solar industry is booming and is expected by the end of 2019 to generate $1.4 trillion in annual electricity sales, according research firm IHS Solar.
Solar companies have been ramping up their solar projects in the past year as a result of the election of President Donald Trump.
Earlier this month, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) released a report stating that solar could account for up to 13 percent of the country’s total electricity generation by 2030.
The U.S. is already home to more than 20 gigawatts of solar capacity.
The report also said that the United Kingdom’s National Grid will add nearly 1 gigawatt of solar generation to its network by 2021.
Tesla and SolarCity are not the only companies involved in this project.
Other major players include SolarCity and SolarPower, both of which have installed solar arrays in Nevada and Arizona.
